Veneers

Dental Veneers: Cost, Procedure & More

Do you want a straight, sparkling, attractive smile without having to wait? Veneers could be the cosmetic dentistry treatment for you.

What are dental veneers?

The word ‘veneer’ originates from the French root word ‘fournir,’ which means ‘to furnish.’

The veneer furnishes your tooth with a thin plastic or porcelain covering which is attached to the surface of the teeth, giving your teeth a new and improved appearance.

Generally, veneers are used for cosmetic purposes rather than as a tool for repairing damaged or decayed teeth.

Their main purpose is to improve the appearance of your teeth, although in some cases veneers can make the teeth stronger and in turn improve the functioning and health of the teeth.

Veneers can quickly and easily correct a range of cosmetic issues, and we often recommend them as part of a smile makeover.

Veneers can correct the shape, length, and the colour of a tooth, and they can even disguise gaps between the teeth.

During the process of fitting a dental veneer, a small amount of tooth enamel will be scraped from the tooth surface to allow space for attaching the dental veneer.

Veneers can be fitted to one single tooth or multiple teeth at the same time.

Dental veneers are personalised and will be manufactured to match the size and the colour of your teeth, so nothing stands out and your smile appears natural.

Why do people choose to have veneers?

  • Amazing, effective, fast results -an instant makeover for those who are not happy with their teeth
  • You don’t have to endure wearing braces
  • Short procedure time
  • Can provide protection for your underlying tooth substance
  • You can personalise the colour you would like your teeth to be
  • Can choose to have a single veneer or more depending on your cosmetic needs
  • Crooked teeth appear to be straight

Are there any drawbacks?

  • Ensuring that the veneer treatment is successful requires the partial or removal of some of the surface enamel of each tooth — an irreversible procedure. However, usually, only a small part of the tooth will be scraped away.
  • Veneers do not last forever and need to be replaced every 5 to 12 years. However, the better you take care of them, the longer they will last!

What types of veneers are available?

There are two main types of veneers. They can be made from a thin layer of porcelain or composite resin and cover the entire front surface of teeth:

Composite:

These are engineered resin affixed to the outer surface of the tooth.

Composite dental veneers are more affordable, although often less natural-looking and long-lasting than porcelain veneers.

Porcelain:

Porcelain veneers are thin shells of porcelain adhered to the outer surface of the tooth.

Both are made to match your teeth (or whiten) and improve your overall smile.

What is the procedure like?

Fitting a veneer typically takes place across two appointments for porcelain veneers, while ceramic veneers can be completed in a just one appointment. Book now.

At the first appointment, your dentist will remove about half a millimetre of enamel from the surface of your tooth to create the ideal surface for bonding the veneer and a little extra space in your mouth to ensure your veneers don’t feel bulky or uncomfortable.

During your second visit to the practice, we will fit the veneers. We cement them into place using a special adhesive, then the cement is hardened using an ultraviolet light.

How long your veneers last will depends both on the material you choose and how well you care for them.

The most popular material is porcelain, which can last for 10 to 15 years with the proper care.

How do I care for my veneers afterwards?

If you want to get the most out of your new veneers, proper aftercare is essential.

Fortunately, caring for your porcelain veneers does not require a lot if you already have a solid in oral hygiene routine in place!

Proper brushing and flossing are crucial. If you fail to properly care for your teeth, this could lead to serious dental issues including decay or gum disease.

What to avoid?

When it comes to porcelain veneers aftercare, knowing what not do is just as important as knowing what to do.

Firstly, patients should never use their teeth (whether natural or veneers) as tools.

Although sometimes it can be tempting to use your teeth to open or cut something, this can compromise the integrity of the veneers and could lead to premature damage.

Patients should also avoid chewing on pens, pencils, and ice. Those who habitually bite their nails should find ways to reduce this habit if they want to keep their veneers in the best condition they can.
