Worn down teeth are an increasing problem for many patients – you are not alone.

However, once the condition has been identified the dentist will be able to provide you with accurate advice that will help correct the issue and prevent it from returning.

How much wear is normal?

We see many adult patients in our practice exhibit extensive wear and come to our surgery to makeover short teeth and spaces the spaces that form between them.

The most common complaint about patients is that when they smile, their teeth are not visible meaning the condition tends to make people appear older than they are.

As mentioned above, as we age, it is completely normal for wear to occur on teeth.

Over the age of 30, it is normal for patients to lose around one millimetre of length to the upper teeth.

Patients over forty should not have more than one millimetre, whereas if you are fifty and over two millimetres is acceptable.

Problems caused by worn teeth:

  • Tooth sensitivity, difficulty chewing
  • Fractured teeth, bite problems
  • Headaches,TMJ
  • Nerve exposure

The three causes of tooth wear

  • Abrasion (external forces): Toothpaste and toothbrushes
  • Attrition (from tooth grinding): Unconscious bruxism
  • Erosion (chemical destruction): Acidic foods, drinks and carbonated beverages

Treatment for short and worn teeth

Various treatments can help restore your eroded teeth to a healthy state.

Treatments like composite bonding, contouring, and crowns are common methods to rebuild or conceal the tooth.

One of the fastest ways to achieve the smile you want is with porcelain veneers.

A cosmetic procedure that rectifies many dental issues, veneers are a quick fix to enhance your overall smile.

Using minimal or no drilling, veneers are stain-resistant and allow patients to choose their shade.

With little to no prep needed, the procedure is minimally invasive as the veneer is placed on the tooth’s front surface, unlike crowns that cover the whole tooth.

Can't thank this practice enough for all their help. I don't post reviews very often, so when I do, it's because an impression has been left! Dr Ali saw me at short notice to help fix a broken tooth. The nurse (I think her name was Danni) was so helpful and kind, as were the rest of the team. Thank you for being there for me in my hour of need (the same day i asked for an appointment!)
