In what cases are dental crowns required?
There are several occasions when a dentist may offer a dental crown as a solution for oral or aesthetic problems:
- If you have a weak tooth which needs some extra protection (e.g. tooth has been affected by decay or has cracked so needs to be held together)
- You have a tooth which has already broken
- A crown can be used to hold a dental bridge in place or to cover an implant
- For cosmetic/aesthetic purposes
Crowns are available in a range of materials, with different benefits and price points. The material you use for your crown may depend on its placement in your mouth.
Ceramic crowns are placed toward the front of the mouth because they blend seamlessly with your natural tooth colour.
Metal crowns are typically placed toward the back of the mouth because they are durable and can withstand the biting and chewing required by the molars.
CEREC® is a ceramic reconstruction system that allows us to design and produce high-quality ceramic dental restorations in a single visit.
The CEREC® system takes a precise 3D scan of your mouth and sends this image to a milling machine, which then produces an accurate ceramic onlay, inlay, crown, veneer, or bridge that your dentist can fit immediately.
The high-grade porcelain restorations we can develop with CEREC® technology are incredibly durable, ensuring a long-lasting solution to tooth repair.
The best part is, that we can fully manufacture a CEREC® restoration while you are still in the dentist’s chair, allowing us to complete the entire process during one appointment.
How does the procedure work when a crown is being fitted?
When preparing the tooth for a crown fitting, the dentist usually requires two appointments with a patient, the first for tooth preparation and the second for fitting the permanent crown.
During the first visit, we will take x-rays of your tooth to ensure the roots of the tooth are healthy enough for the treatment to commence.
We will file down your natural tooth to the required shape – patients can be put under a local anaesthetic for this stage if desired. Next, we will take an impression to custom-make your permanent crown, before attaching a temporary crown for you to wear in the meantime.
Once your permanent crown is ready, we will remove the temporary crown and fix your permanent crown in place with a special adhesive.
During this stage, you can inform your dentist of any issues e.g. if you are not happy with the colour.
