Types of tooth discolouration:
Yellow or stained teeth are a very common occurrence in modern diets and lifestyles. From coffee and wine staining to old age and old dentistry, plaque and tartar, the reasons are many.
The type of discolouring dictates what treatments are suitable.
For example, if your teeth are chipped or grey/yellow, this can occur from tooth decay or simply from ageing. In this case, a simple tooth whitening treatment is unlikely to give you the results you are after.
- Extrinsic Discolouration is from factors outside of your teeth and gums ie coffee, wine or smoking
- Intrinsic Discolouration is where the change of colour from white to yellow (dentine darkens) or to grey is caused by decay in the teeth themselves.
- Fillings that do not match the tooth colour or are very old can cause discolouration, as can crowns and bridges that are ill-fitting. Old crowns can leave a black shadow by the gum line.

Where to start
The first stop is usually the hygenist, who can clean your teeth and gums and remove any extrinsic discolouration.
The hygenist can show you ways to maintain your new white smile once you have completed treatment.
Once the hygenist has improved your oral hygiene, this is when one of our dentists can fully examine your mouth and suggest the right course of treatment.
Teeth whitening is very popular and can be inexpensive to improve your smile.
However, if your staining is caused by old or poor dental work, teeth whitening products on their own will not work long-term.
You would be wasting your money.
Choice Of Treatments
Once the teeth and mouth or clean, you can begin your treatment. Prices range from the low £100s to the high £10,000.
Teeth Whitening is the cheapest option. We offer the complete range of Enlighten Evolution, Philips Zoom Whitepeed and Boutique Whitening. All of these treatments will remove staining caused by diet or beverages. Prices start from £345.
Veneers are a really conservative option if it is a simple or perhaps two teeth that need their colour improving. Veneers are normally used in combination with tooth whitening so that all teeth are whitened, and then the veneers are added to match the new colour and cover the discolouration. See prices.
New dental work – if the discolouring is caused by old crowns, fillings or poor root canals, these would need to be replaced before you could expect teeth whitening treatment to take effect.
