Quick veneer guide:

  1. How expensive are veneers? The cost of veneers varies due to the dentist used, the number of veneers desired and the amount of work required. Often seen as cost-effective in the long run, veneers initially can cost from £1,000 and is available on 0% finance.
  2. Can you get veneers on the NHS? As this procedure is cosmetic and often used only to improve a patient’s appearance, veneers are not available on the NHS, only in the very rare cases where they are required as a clinical need. Read more.
  3. Do dentists recommend veneers? As the treatment offers many benefits to patients both for aesthetic and oral health reasons, the procedure is often vouched for by cosmetic dentists. However, be clear that only reputable dentists will recommend veneers that are applied to the front surface of the tooth, not as a cap!
  4. Do teeth grow back after veneers? You do not need to have your teeth shaved down for veneers. This method is for crown procedures. For veneer applications, your original tooth remains intact with only some procedures requiring a slight etching of the enamel on the front surface.
  5. How long do veneers last? With the right care and attention, veneers can last a lifetime and have been known to last 15+ years. Read more about aftercare and maintenance of veneers.

Do I qualify for veneers?

Do any of the below apply to you?

  • I have stained discoloured or yellow teeth
  • Suffer from fluorosis
  • I have bite problems such as overbites, underbites, crooked and overcrowded teeth
  • I feel like I have too much gum when I smile
  • My teeth are chipped, cracked or broken
  • I have gaps between my teeth

If you have answered yes to any of the above, it would appear that porcelain or composite veneers might be a suitable solution for you.

Types of veneers

Due to advances in modern technology, numerous brands and types of veneers have emerged.

  • Porcelain: The strongest and most durable material, these are the longest-lasting veneers. The only prep work they require is a slight etching of enamel so that the veneer can bond successfully to the tooth. The removal of enamel is permanent, but it is often only millimetres to make room for the ultra-thin shell. There are various brands of porcelain veneers that also require minimal to no prep work – ask your dentist about these.
  • Composite: Made from a composite resin (not porcelain) that is crafted directly onto the tooth. Applied in layers to the tooth and sculpted, composite veneers do not require any tooth preparation.

What’s the veneer procedure like?

Traditional veneer applications may involve the altering of your original tooth structure. However, new more advanced versions of veneer applications involve a wafer-thin shell being applied the front surface of your tooth only.

The preparation of this involves etching of a few millimetres of enamel to make room for the veneer so it does not look thick and is able to bond successfully. More.
