Steps on how to register with a dentist

You have the option to register with a private dentist instead of an NHS if you prefer. This might be because local NHS practices are currently at capacity and unable to register you, or there’s a long waiting list in your area.

While going private ensures you cover your own dental costs, patients have a larger choice of treatments to improve their smile, that is not offered through the NHS. Discover the cost of going private and fees.

Once you’re registered with a dentist, you’ll be free to book future appointments for routine check-ups, hygiene appointments, emergency appointments and any necessary treatments.

Steps to register as a private patient

After identifying a dental practice, you'll want to begin by contacting them by phone or email to inquire about registering. Registration is a simple, fast process that typically takes a few minutes. For example, you can register through a form online, or simply schedule your first appointment to begin the registration process.

Ways to register:

Answer a few questions over the phone when calling our practice on 020 8224 7562, or email your name and telephone number to [email protected], or visit this page to fill out a form.

Alternatively, you can choose to chat with us live between the hours of 9 am and 5.30pm Monday to Friday and we'll help you get signed up.

Completing registration forms

To register as a patient with a practice, whether private or NHS, you'll be asked to complete a registration form, which requires typical information like your contact details and medical history.

Providing proof of identity and address

In some instances, you might be required to provide a proof of identity or address as part of the registration process (more typically with NHS).

Typical forms of identification that are accept tend to include a driver's license, passport, or a utility bill with your name and address on.

How long will my first dental appointment last?

Your first appointment will be slightly longer than your routine ones as it takes a comprehensive assessment if your oral health, condition of your teeth and bite. Typical appointment times are an hour, or one hour and half.

In some instances, we're able to offer same day treatments. For example, if we find that you need a filling following your check-up, or a hygiene clean, we might be able to schedule this straight after for you.

How much will it cost as a new patient?

It's free to register, however, your first check-up appointment will be mor expensive than your routine exams - see below:

After your first new patient check-up, you'll get to enjoy our existing patient rates.

Why are check-ups more expensive for a new patient?

Your initial first check-up with us is more extensive, it's here, where we'll take all your necessary scans and x-rays and get familiar with your oral condition. The new patient check-up is a thorough assessment and looks deeper into the foundation of your smile.

Do you have a waiting list?

The benefit of going private is no waiting lists or backed-up appointments.

As a private practice, our diary is not managed or limited in the same way as NHS practices. We have the luxury of space and multiple dentists available, who are able to see you when it's convenient for you, and an appointment can often be scheduled the same day or the same week as your call.

Securing your appointment

To secure your appointment, patients will be asked to pay a deposit upon booking. Usually the deposit amount is the cost of your check-up and is refundable up to two business days prior to your appointment. This is to prevent last-minute cancellations and ensures we're able to offer appointments to patients who need them when there is space.

Dental Impant Surgery:I had my dental implants fitted recently and I am extremely happy with the outcome. Ali and the team have done an amazing job since I lost my 2 front teeth over 6 years ago. I had to wait for the surgery for a long time due to my age and the issues surrounding having implants at a young age.I finally had the surgery 12 weeks ago and had my two new crowns fitted last week. They look absolutely amazing and the whole procedure was way less painful than I ever thought it would be.I would highly recommend getting your implants done at the Gentle Dental Practice, you won't regret it!A massive thank you to everyone at the practice!

Fantastic work on my teeth and I would highly recommend! My teeth turned out better than I had even hoped for. If you are in need of any dental work, you would be doing a great disservice if you didn't speak to this practice first. The staff were extremely friendly, there were text updates and all in all an excellent service from start to finish. If you haven't guessed already, I am thoroughly pleased with The Gentle Dentle. Thank you!

Like many people, I have an immense fear of dentistry, and dentists, due to previous experiences.I had two broken teeth and one that had been treated incorrectly by an NHS dentist. I had been in daily pain for about 18 months, and had been put on a 6 month waiting list by my NHS dentist.I called gentle dental to explain my problem and they offered me a same day appointment. They were kind, compassionate, understanding, patient and validating. I’m not sure anybody ever feels completely comfortable in the chair, but It’s the closest I’ve ever come! The work needed was carried out, all of the staff were kind and welcoming, and it showed me that the dentist doesn’t have to be a dreaded place!Thank you so, so much gentle dental! I will definitely be returning.

Dental Implants - 3 New Teeth - June 2022I had the most professional and pain free experience when getting my new tooth implants at Gentle Dental. Honestly I put it off for some many years because I just didn't want to go through the pain. But my experience was totally the opposite. Ali and the wonderful girls were there every step of the way. All my questions got answered and I was reassured everything would work out well. And it did. I was worried for no reason.I did think about going abroad to have it done but when you consider the risk factor, time and professional standards - it made no sense to me. I have known Ali for a long time and knew I would be in the best hands and if there were any issues these would could be resolved easily. If you are thinking of having dental implants at Gentle - don't waste any more time. Just book and get it done. Was it painful ? No, uncomfortable for a few days, yes for sure.I just wish I had it done sooner. Thanks guys, love my new teeth 🙂

Can't thank this practice enough for all their help. I don't post reviews very often, so when I do, it's because an impression has been left! Dr Ali saw me at short notice to help fix a broken tooth. The nurse (I think her name was Danni) was so helpful and kind, as were the rest of the team. Thank you for being there for me in my hour of need (the same day i asked for an appointment!)

This place was recommended to me by family and for a nervous patient the best experience. The reception welcome is cheerful and friendly, beautifully modern area with hot drinks and water on offer.I needed implants, crowns and bridges followed by whitening, so lots of appointments. My dentist Mr Ali Rafai was superb from start to finish, so professional and personable. Throughout the whole process I was cared for wonderfully plus lots of laughs along the way. The constant care during appointments was very comforting, no rushing, and I knew I my needs were Mr Rafai's priority. Plus check up call the next day without fail to make sure everything was going well.Absolutely deserves five stars!

Fantastic experience with Ali. It took 18 months including bone grafting, removing and replacing failed dental implants, invisaline for my bottom teeth which were all over the place and some veneers but now I'm delighted with the outcome.Ali was always very clear about how this wasn't an overnight solution in an honest and forthright manner which gave me confidence that he would deliver results.I was offered several overnight solutions from other dentists locally at a fraction of the cost but when I see how much effort and detail that went into my plan, I know i made the right choice.

Registering with an NHS Dentist

At the Gentle Dental in East Molesey, we’re not an NHS dentist, but we have enlisted steps below for patients seeking local NHS care.

How long does the registration process take?

The registration process with an NHS dentist typically takes a short amount of time, but this will depend on the dental practice's availability and any paperwork required.

What if I need emergency dental care before I’m registered with an NHS dentist?

If you require emergency care, before you're registered with an NHS dentist, you'll have to contact NHS  111 for further assistance, as they'll be able to advise how to get accessing urgent care in your area.

Can I register my child with an NHS dentist?

Parents and legal guardians can register their children with an NHS dentist so they can gain access to regular and preventive care.

Do I need to bring any documents to my registration appointment?

Instructions and specific requirements will vary by practice, which means that you might or might not need to bring proof of identity to your appointment.

Is there an age limit for registering with an NHS dentist?

There is no age limit when registering with an NHS dentist. Children, adults and seniors all have the right to care with an NHS dentist and can access all NHS dental services.

What if I’m not sure which NHS dentist to register with?

If you're not sure which NHS dentist to register with, you can find care with the NHS website's Find a Dentist tool, or contact NHS England directly for help in finding available dentists in your area.

Do I need to pay to register with an NHS dentist?

New patient registrations with an NHS dentist is free of charge. However, you might be required to pay for NHS treatments based on the band charges, unless exempt. Learn more here.

What treatments are available via the NHS?

The NHS will cover all general treatments. They do not offer any treatments that improve the look of the smile, as seen with cosmetic dentistry. View all treatments here.

If I pay for private treatment, how will my NHS care be affected?

Guidance for NHS patients suggests that you'll still be entitled to free NHS care if you opt for private dental care. However, the NHS cannot pay or subsidise private treatment. At the same time, your position on an NHS waiting list should not be affected even if you elect for private consultations.
