Inflamed Gums & Mouth Swelling Dental Emergencies

In the case of a swollen mouth, start by applying a cold compress to the outside of your mouth/cheek.
Even though you may wish for some gum relief, we would advise you never to put aspirin or other painkillers on your gums because it may irritate and burn the gum tissue further.
In situations of distress, see a dentist as soon as possible.
Soft tissue injuries
As the tissues in the mouth are sensitive and delicate when they become injured, it can be a very painful occurrence.
Soft tissues include:
- Gums
- Cheeks
- Tongue
- Lips
These soft tissues can be easily wounded if they are accidentally bitten, put in contact with food that is too hot or aggravated in a traumatic accident.
In some instances, soft tissues can also become injured when you chew on hard objects.
Symptoms
The main indication of hurt soft tissue is unbearable, throbbing pain. The tooth can often become sensitive to heat or pressure in the beginning stages. Be careful, as this can develop into a fever.
Other instances can involve swollen lymph nodes located in the jaw or neck. These may be tender to the touch. You may also experience pain in your sinus area.
In the most severe cases, you may have an abscess. If this ruptures, you will experience a foul-smelling and tasting fluid seeping into the mouth.
