The Gentle Dental operates an emergency dental service for patients experiencing extreme discomfort or pain requiring immediate dental care.
With our patients at the forefront of our minds, we want to restore comfort at every level and make sure our patient’s oral conditions are maintained and repaired back to a healthy state.
In the case of a swollen mouth, start by applying a cold compress to the outside of your mouth/cheek.
Even though you may wish for some gum relief, we would advise you never to put aspirin or other painkillers on your gums because it may irritate and burn the gum tissue further.
In situations of distress, see a dentist as soon as possible.
Soft tissue injuries
As the tissues in the mouth are sensitive and delicate when they become injured it can be a very painful occurrence.
Soft tissues include:
These soft tissues can be easily wounded if they are accidentally bitten, put in contact with food that is too hot or aggravated in a traumatic accident.
In some instances, soft tissues can also become injured when you chew on hard objects.
The main indication of a hurt soft tissue is unbearable, throbbing pain. In the beginning stages, the tooth can often become sensitive to any heat or pressure. Be careful as this can develop into a fever.
Other instances can involve swollen lymph nodes which are located in the aw or neck. These may be tender to the touch. You may also experience pain in your sinus area.
In the most severe cases, you may have an abscess. If this ruptures, you will experience a foul-smelling and tasting fluid that will seep into the mouth.
How a dentist will treat the pain
Meet principal dentist Dr Ali Rifai, a full member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentists (BACD), implant dentist and a Gold Invisalign provider. He comes highly recommended and can treat any dental problem confidently and accurately.
A dentist like Dr Rifai is highly experienced in diagnosing and repairing damage to soft tissue. However, severe injuries to these areas are often handled by oral surgeons in hospitals.
First, the dentist will inspect the mouth and determine if teeth are loose or damaged. In this case, if teeth are stable and the injury is only occurring in the gum or soft tissues, more straightforward procedures will be used to treat the wound.
