Worn down teeth are an increasing problem for many patients – you are not alone.
As some wear to the teeth is completely usual as you age, when teeth get shorter and darker it can cause cosmetic concern for patients.
However, once the condition has been identified the dentist will be able to provide you with accurate advice that will help correct the issue and prevent it from returning.
We see many adult patients in our practice exhibit extensive wear and come to our surgery to makeover short teeth and spaces the spaces that form between them.
The most common complaint about patients is that when they smile, their teeth are not visible meaning the condition tends to make people appear older than they are.
As mentioned above, as we age, it is completely normal for wear to occur on teeth.
Over the age of 30, it is normal for patients to lose around one millimetre of length to the upper teeth.
Patients over forty should not have more than one millimetre, whereas if you are fifty and over two millimetres is acceptable.
Problems caused by worn teeth:
The three causes of tooth wear
Abrasion (external forces): Toothpaste and toothbrushes
Attrition (from tooth grinding): Unconscious bruxism
Erosion (chemical destruction): Acidic foods, drinks and carbonated beverages
There are various treatments that can help restore your eroded teeth back to a healthy state.
Treatments like composite bonding, contouring and crowns are all regular methods to rebuild the tooth or conceal it.
One of the fastest ways to achieve the smile you want is with porcelain veneers.
A cosmetic procedure that rectifies a wealth of dental issues, veneers are a quick fix to enhance your overall smile.
Using minimal or no drilling, veneers are stain-resistant and allow the patient to choose their own shade.
With little to no prep needed, the procedure is minimally invasive as the veneer is placed on the front surface of the tooth, unlike crowns which cover the whole tooth.
