Fillings

Tooth decay is one of the most common dental problems patients experience.

Worried about having tooth decay?

If your tooth is decaying your dentist will first administer a local anaesthetic. Then they will remove the decayed material from the tooth with a drill.

Once the decay is removed, the dentist will fill the tooth with a filling material of your choice.

These are some signs that can indicate whether your tooth is decaying:

  • Pain/sensitivity when biting or chewing
  • Increased sensitivity to hot, cold and sugary foods
  • General tooth pain
  • If the tooth is rough, broke, or chipped
  • A previous filling has fallen out

Additionally, in some cases, you may be affected by tooth decay without realising it or experiencing any of these symptoms – which is one of the reasons we recommend regular check-ups with your dentist.

What are fillings made from?

There are different materials to choose from when it comes to having a filling.

Amalgam and composite are two of the most common choices of filling material.

1. Amalgam is an ultra-tough alloy made of a blend of metals including copper, mercury, silver, and tin.

2. Composite is a mix of powdered glass and acrylic resin, providing a more natural-looking alternative to metal fillings.

How do fillings work?

When the tooth decays, a hole (or a cavity) is left behind.

Leaving this cavity untreated is a risk because the bacteria which lead to the decaying in the first place remains after the tooth has decayed.

During the filling procedure, we will clean away this decay that remains within the cavity – before refilling the space.

This prevents further damage to the tooth, while the filling serves as replacing the gap left behind from the decayed tooth.
