Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that involves the care and treatment of your teeth’s internal tissues with procedures such as root canal therapy.

What is endodontistry?

Concerned with the treatment of dental pulp and tissues surrounding the root of the tooth, an endodontist primarily treats or prevents infections of this dental pulp located at the centre of each tooth.

The dental pulp is the soft tissue that contains all the tooth’s nerves. The pulp can become infected, either through severe decay or an injury that compromises the surface of the tooth and allows bacteria to enter.

You will require a root canal treatment to clear the infection and eliminate the otherwise-inevitable need for a tooth extraction.

Your dentist will use a small file to remove the infected tissue from the root canal under a local anaesthetic, before sealing the tooth with a filling material.

In many cases, they will also fit a crown to protect the tooth and restore its functionality.

Standard surgeries performed by an endodontist include:

  • Dividing the tooth in half
  • Repairing an injured tooth root
  • Removing an unrepairable tooth root

A root canal is a common treatment performed by endodontists, and most patients fear this treatment as it is known to be painful.

However, many people find that the actual treatment is a lot more endurable than they imagined and often the fear can be more severe than is warranted.

When should I see an endodontist?

Root canal treatment occurs when the pulp of the tooth is inflamed or infected or needs to be removed as it has decayed or died entirely.

If you are experiencing a severe toothache, you may need root canal treatment.

Delaying treatment could lead to tooth loss. Root canal therapy is a common dental procedure and can save your tooth.

Usually, if you have severe issues and are in need of treatment that your dentist cannot perform themselves, they will refer you to an endodontist who is more qualified to help solve your issues.
