Overjet and underbite:
An overbite is identified when the teeth in the upper jaw protrude over the bottom teeth by (30-50%).
Medically, this is known as a malocclusion, which can be corrected via cosmetic or orthodontic procedures.
Overbites sometimes may appear as crooked teeth, when in reality there could be a misalignment of the teeth and jaws.
An overjet is when the upper front teeth protrude outwards, this can often be referred to as buck teeth where the horizontal relationship between the upper and lower incisors.
This dental condition is characterised by the lower teeth extending outwards further than the teeth located in the upper jaw.
These are often referred to as a Class III malocclusion, which can create a bulldog-like appearance.
Both are often caused by genetics as the condition is hereditary. However, overbites can also be caused by bad habits such as thumb sucking.
Other causes of the condition include teeth grinding and TMJ (temporomandibular joint dysfunction).
